Hyde Park High School Students Attend SEMI High Tech U

Four Hyde Park High School students attended an important three-day technology conference in the Austin area this month.
Juniors Bria Penn, Cooper Hampton, and Jack Brady, and Sophomore Brooks Barton joined 30+ Austin area high school students at SEMI High Tech U held at the Samsung Campus March 2 - 4.  According to the SEMI Foundation website, “SEMI High Tech U provides secondary school students with an intensive three/four day, industry-led introduction to the high tech industry, potential career paths and education requirements to meet their goals.” This Austin career exploratory event was sponsored by Applied Materials, Kinetics, Samsung Austin Semiconductor, TEL, and The University of Texas - NASCENT.  HPHS College Counselor Jenifer Price works with students and parents to navigate the path from HP hallways to universities across the nation. Mrs. Price stated, “This conference gives students a chance to look into STEM careers. An innovative, hands-on experience like this might open their eyes to the possibilities ahead. This conference may also provide industry insights and networking opportunities with STEM professionals for our high school students.” Junior Cooper Hampton currently plans to major in business upon graduation. He stated, “I liked learning off-campus through experiences like the invention challenge and visiting the clean-room labs focused on nanotechnologies.” Sophomore Brooks Barton is looking into the field of marine biology and reflected on the conference by adding, “The world is continually changing and electronics will be a big part of every industry. Attending a conference like this may open doors for us in the future.”
