Middle School Curriculum

• Math

  The math track at the Middle School includes Math 6, Advanced Math 6, Math 7, Pre-Algebra, and Algebra 1.  Algebra 1 is offered in 8^th grade for high school credit.  Beginning in 6^th grade, students may be placed into Advanced math. Placement into math classes is determined by standardized test results, previous year’s grades, teacher recommendation, and work ethic.
  
  Students are not locked into one track or another. Teachers will monitor students’ progress throughout the school year to determine if and when changes are appropriate.

• Science

  The Hyde Park Middle School Science Department provides an opportunity for students to study Physical, Life, and Earth Sciences while in middle school. The Science Department is pledged to provide its students with a rigorous training in the scientific process, its history, diversity, achievements, and contemporary role in the human quest for knowledge in seeking the Maker of the Universe.

• English

  The English Department at Hyde Park Middle School encompasses grades 6, 7, and 8 with Advanced classes beginning in 7^th grade. The curriculum requires summer reading. During the school year, all English classes are required to read supplemental novels while concentrating on writing, comprehension and communication skills. The following criteria are used to place students in the appropriate level of English beginning in 7th grade.  Placement into English classes is determined by standardized test results, previous year’s grades, teacher recommendation, and work ethic.

• Social Studies

  The Social Studies program is built on the knowledge that every student at Hyde Park Middle School will have the responsibility of citizenship in adulthood. Each course is designed to enhance the student's knowledge of our common heritages and our common future. 6^th grade students study World Cultures, which also incorporates Academic Strategies into the curriculum.  7th grade students focus on Texas History and 8^th grade students learn United States History.

• Bible

  At the Middle School, students receive three full years of Bible instruction.  In 6^th grade students explore the foundations of the Bible and Biblical history.  In 7^th grade they learn about Biblical character, with an emphasis placed on the life of Jesus.  In 8^th grade students discuss Jesus in the Old Testament.  The Bible curriculum is supported with real-life experiences, including weekly chapels and regular service opportunities.

• Foreign Language

  Hyde Park Middle School offers Spanish, Latin, and American Sign Language for high school credit. These courses are offered in 8^th grade.  Additionally, students have the opportunity to take semester-long introductory courses in Spanish in 6^th and 7^th grades.  The modern language of Spanish emphasizes the student’s ability to communicate verbally with native speakers of those languages around the globe. Students balance their language study with cultural studies as they learn to understand elements of other societies.

• Electives

  Hyde Park Middle School offers a wide-variety of elective classes to suit students’ interests and provide a well-rounded education.  With a focus on STEM and Fine Arts, middle school students experience ample opportunity for growth in these areas.  Fine Arts electives include art, band, worship band, fundamentals of acting, musical theater, and yearbook.  STEM courses include computer programming, digital multimedia, technology applications, and HPTV (the Middle School’s weekly broadcast).   

• Social Emotional Learning

  Hyde Park recognizes that adolescence is a critical developmental stage for investing in the social emotional competence of our students to promote school engagement, relationship development and overall academic success. Through the implementation and seamless integration of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) into our core curriculum, advisory classes, and comprehensive counseling program, Hyde Park Middle School leverages the unique developmental needs of young students to facilitate growth in self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, interpersonal relationships, and responsible decision making.
