Hyde Park Coach Celebrates 600th Varsity Basketball Win

Each day, Head Varsity Girls’ Basketball Coach Bruce Consier brings experience, joy, and teamwork to the court.
With a long history of basketball successes, Coach Consier consistently instills a “love of the game” into his players. “I began coaching basketball in 1983 at Christian Temple in Fort Worth while I was attending Southwestern Seminary. I had the privilege to coach the varsity teams at Christian Temple for 7 years.” Longevity and commitment are two words that describe Consier’s career. Over a 30+ year history, Coach Consier has coached both boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball in Texas and Arizona.   Throughout his career, Consier has taken 7 teams to the state final four including girls’ and boys’ teams from Christian Temple in Fort Worth and the girls’ team from Phoenix Christian. Over the past five years, two of Coach Consier’s teams advanced to the State Top 8 and 2 teams advanced to the Final 4.

This experienced basketball coach joined the Hyde Park Schools Administrative Team in June 2015 as the Athletic Director and the Varsity Girls’ Basketball Coach. Coach Consier explains, “God opened the door at Hyde Park for me and my family so that I could continue to do what I love ... coach basketball. He also provided the opportunity for my wife and I to live near my sons and this was important so we could help with the illness of one of our grandchildren. It meant a great deal to have this opportunity at this time.”  Along with a love of family, accepting a new challenge is an encouragement to Coach Consier. “I was blessed to come to a strong school and to have the challenge of rebuilding another program. I am starting again at the same spot I encountered about 16 years ago when I joined the program at Phoenix Christian.” Coach Consier and the Phoenix Christian Girls’ Varsity Basketball Team won the state championship in 2015.

At Hyde Park, Coach Consier is already making a difference as the season begins. “I love the girls’ enthusiasm and their attitude ... they work hard to become a better team at each practice and each game.” With a current record of 11-4, the Lady Panthers have enjoyed a strong pre-district season and the participation in the high school girls’ basketball program has doubled. On December 9, the Lady Panthers met the Austin Royals on the Hyde Park High School home court. Along with the 11th win of the season for the Lady Panthers, Coach Consier celebrated another outstanding milestone. When asked about his coaching philosophy, Bruce summarized, “I love basketball! If I share my love of the game with players, I can help them believe that they can compete. When they compete, they start to win ... and once a team has this confidence, I’ve seen programs succeed!” Hyde Park congratulates Coach Consier on his 600th Varsity Basketball win and thanks him for investing in student athletes over the years!
