Hyde Park's AP English Department Expands Student Learning

Each day, HP English students tackle character analysis, scene development, and more through discussions and projects in the classrooms of Hyde Park High School.
In February, HPHS English Faculty Member, Nina Radakovic, planned an inspiring field trip for her Junior level AP English students to deepen their thinking and writing skills. Ms. Radakovic, known as "Ms. R." by her students, is a University of Virginia grad and an English enthusiast. Ms. R's love of novels and writing is contagious with her students. Reflecting on the field trip, she stated, "The students toured Mark Mothersbaugh's exhibition entitled, Myopia, and also participated in an interactive, art-making activity. The purpose of the trip was to inspire students to write about art in preparation for a College Board Writing Contest. The contest asks students to explore how humans interact with art and how we, by appreciating art, participate in a larger, ongoing conversation about culture and society. Students wrote instructively and creatively about a work of art they found inspiring and how they would influence others to interact with the art as well. The winner of this contest receives publication in The Atlantic Monthly, along with a $5,000 prize." The Myopia exhibit is on display at The Contemporary Austin Jones Center through April 17. Ms. R. encourages others to see this inspiring exhibit adding, "Anyone under 18 is always free and welcome to visit the museum!"
