Hyde Park Senior Named Coca-Cola Scholar!
HP Senior Reilly Menchaca was selected as a 2017 Coca-Cola Scholar.
This year, the Coca-Cola Scholars Program selected 1,914 Semifinalists out of 86,000 applications nationwide and recently announced the 250 Regional Finalists. From the finalists, 150 Coca-Cola Scholars were selected with each student receiving a $20,000 college scholarship.The Coca-Cola Scholars Program recognizes students for their academic excellence, capacity to lead and serve, and their commitment to making a significant impact in their communities.
After graduation, Reilly is looking forward to the next step in her educational journey. Her list of applications include The University of Texas, Duke, UNC, Wake Forest, and Vanderbilt. Reilly shared, “As of now, I’ve been accepted to Vanderbilt and The University of Texas (Business/Plan II). I plan to attend Vanderbilt in the fall and major in Neuroscience and Economics. I hope to continue my education and finish with a PhD as I pursue a career in research within these fields.” Reilly has a natural love for learning and when asked about her favorite class at Hyde Park, she replied, “Calculus BC, taught by Mrs. Sierra, has been outstanding. She is a great teacher and this class is challenging. The class has also shown me a new, big-picture perspective and helped tie together all of my previous math courses. I’ve enjoyed that!”
When asked what advice she would share with incoming freshmen or new students at Hyde Park, she stated, “Don’t be shy and try a variety of activities. At Hyde Park, the staff and students will support you as you are trying new things!” Reilly joined the HP family in 9th grade, coming from Eanes ISD. During her high school years at HP, Reilly has been a part of the athletic training team (10, 11, 12), Prancers (9, 10), theater program (9, 10, 11), Latin Club (10, 11, 12), Student Council (10, 11, 12), and Youth & Government Team (10, 11). Reilly was also recognized as a National Hispanic Scholar and a National Merit Commended Scholar. Outside of school in the summers, Reilly also serves at Camp Barnabas, a special needs camp in Missouri. She stated, “This is the best week of my year. I truly love this camp and the people we serve!” The HP Community congratulates Reilly and wishes her well as she continues in the Coca-Cola Scholars Program.
